The law consists of a series of rules necessary for society to exist without breaking down into a state of anarchy. It is consistent to think of the law as consisting of both criminal and civil law. Criminal law attempts to prevent conducts that are regarded as socially harmful, and if carried out, deserves punishment (e.g. murder, manslaughter and rape). Civil law consists of a large number of separate legal rights and obligations which, if broken, allow individuals and businesses to sue one another in the civil courts, usually for compensation.
